What is EK Virtual Dispatch Company?
EK Virtual Dispatch Company is an interactive truck dispatch practice environment built into [EK Dispatch Academy](/curriculum), where students run a simulated dispatch operation instead of only reading lessons or watching videos. You set up a virtual company, hire virtual drivers, search a load board, evaluate freight on deadhead and rate per mile, book and dispatch loads, take broker and shipper calls with an AI counterpart, and handle the problems that follow.
What makes it different from a course module is that it responds. Your decisions change the state of the operation — a truck sits, a driver runs out of hours, a promise you made gets kept or broken, margin goes up or down — and you see that outcome instead of being told about it.

Why we built it
Dispatching is a decision job. Reading that deadhead hurts profitability is not the same as being offered a $1,950 load 180 miles away at 4 p.m. with a driver who has six hours left. The concept takes a minute to understand; the judgement takes repetition.
Video-only training also leaves the hardest part untouched: the phone. Most new dispatchers do not fail because they cannot define RPM. They freeze when a broker asks a question they have not thought about, or accept a first offer because countering feels rude.
So the simulator exists to give the parts a video cannot: consequence and repetition.
Create and run your virtual dispatch company
You start by creating the company — naming it, choosing the authority scope and haul type it operates under, and building your operating profile. From there you work a running operation: a dashboard of drivers, active loads, planning, communications, paperwork, billing and performance reporting.
Nothing is a graded quiz. It is an operation that keeps moving whether or not you make a decision, which is much closer to a real dispatch desk.
Work with virtual drivers
Each virtual driver has attributes you must dispatch around, not ignore:
- Equipment types they run
- Home city and region, plus where the truck currently is
- Home-time preference and a home-time due date
- Operating area and authority scope (for example regional or long-haul)
- Years of experience
- A record of promises you made to them — and whether you kept them
That last one matters. You can promise a driver you will get them home by a certain time, and the simulator tracks promises made, kept and broken. Dispatch purely for margin and you will see the relationship side of the job react.

Find and evaluate loads
The load board is where most practice hours go. You search available freight, open a load and work through the questions a working dispatcher asks before saying yes:
- What is the linehaul, and what is the rate per mile on loaded miles?
- How much deadhead does it take to get under it, and what does that do to the real RPM?
- Where does it deliver, and is that somewhere freight comes back out of?
- Does it fit the driver's equipment, hours and home-time clock?
- Is the total profitability worth the truck's day, or is a lower-gross load actually better?

Practice booking loads
Once a load makes sense, you carry it through the workflow: commit to it, assign the driver and truck, dispatch it, then manage it as an active load through pickup, transit and delivery, with paperwork and billing behind it. A booked load is not the end of the exercise — it becomes something you have to run.

AI broker and shipper call practice
This is the part students tell us they cannot get anywhere else. Inside the communications desk, calls come in and you handle them in a live back-and-forth with an AI counterpart playing the broker or shipper role. You can answer or miss a call, type what you want to say, ask for a specific rate, make a commitment such as a pickup window, and save your call notes to the thread.
What you get to rehearse:
- Introducing yourself and your carrier professionally
- Asking the load questions you should ask before committing
- Negotiating a rate and countering an offer
- Handling objections and pushback without losing the load or the margin
- Keeping communication clean and factual under time pressure

Realistic dispatch problems
Problems arrive while you are busy, which is the point. Each one is presented with options, and every option shows what it costs and how much delay it adds — so you are choosing between imperfect outcomes rather than looking for the right answer. Your decision is logged with the outcome it produced.
The situations you work through come out of the operation itself: driver availability and hours-of-service limits, delays, appointment and load changes, detention at a facility, whether to reposition an empty truck or wait, and communication breakdowns with a broker, shipper or driver. Some cost money whatever you choose. That is a realistic lesson on its own.

Visual driver and fleet tracking
The fleet map shows where your trucks are and what status they are in, so planning becomes spatial instead of abstract. You can see which driver is closest to available freight, who is heading the wrong direction for home time, and where you have a truck about to go empty — and dispatch based on that picture.

How this differs from only watching dispatch videos
Video or reading only: read or watch → understand the concept → hope it holds up when it is your call to make.

Yes, for a specific and limited job: repeatable practice. AI can run a broker or shipper scenario as many times as you want, at any hour, without wasting a real broker's time or costing you a relationship while you are still clumsy on the phone. That repetition is genuinely hard to get otherwise.
What it cannot do is replace real-world judgement, current regulations, a carrier's operating reality, or actual broker and carrier relationships. Compliance rules come from primary sources such as the [FMCSA](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/) and Transport Canada, not from a simulation. Real relationships come from doing the work over months. Treat AI practice as a flight simulator: essential preparation, not a licence.
